We are a collective of passionate, international individuals. By looking at cities with fresh eyes, our community-centric design always pushes us to enhance the vibrancy of a place and create a stronger connection with people. We activate and create positive impacts on cities through hospitality, retail, cultural and office projects. Founded by Belgian and Dutch architects Wendy Saunders and Vincent de Graaf in 2005, AIM brings together architecture with interior and product design to create wholly integrated products and ideas.
Our approach is deliberate and focused. Each project is approached individually. We pair context to concept and explore the fine line between vision and practicality. The result are unique spaces with a powerful narrative. Bold, playful, and gritty. Well-built projects with refined details. A built-in love of materials, and passion for place and purpose.
AIM is a passionate and international group of urban planners, architects and designers, who understand the value of a design process and the importance of context. AIM is teamed up with 40 people from 10 countries, which enables us to be understanding and sensitive to projects generating from various contexts and cultural values.
Wendy was born and raised in Bruges, and comes from a family of craftsmen.
Her influences are varied, ranging from the nuances of street life in China, or the construction of a well-made chair, and often visceral – the smell of leather, the sensation a material evokes, the impression of space both externally and on our mental maps.
She graduated with a Masters in Architecture in Ghent, Belgium, and practiced for 10 years in top design offices in Amsterdam, before coming to China in 2004. Wendy's design philosophy is direct, powerful, and punctuated by a sense of humour, beauty, and daring.
Vincent graduated with a master’s degree in Architecture and Urban Planning in Amsterdam and a master’s in interior design in Maastricht.
With nearly 20 years of working experience stretching over multiple respected offices in urban planning, architecture, and interior, and in both Europe and China, Vincent is both an exceptional architect engaging with traditional concepts and cultural ‘big picture’ ideas, and uniquely capable of seeing a project from the inside out.
He has a Dutch practicality and warmth, and his design practice fuses strength with optimism and new, inspired by the considerations of community.
